Filed Under UUs in the News, People | Leave a Comment
(February 9, 2007) From the website of the Unitarian Universalist Association. Note: Rev. Sinkford is a member of DRUUMM.
UUA President William G. Sinkford was honored for the
second consecutive year by Beliefnet.com as one of the nation’s Most
Influential Black Spiritual Leaders. Rev. Sinkford shares the spotlight
with faith leaders from many spiritual traditions, including Iyanla
Vanzant, Archbishop Wilton Gregory, Imam Siraj Wahhaj, and Rev. Johnnie Colemon (full story here).
The editors described their selections with these words: “While by no
means comprehensive, the list represents some of today’s most
prominent–and controversial–spiritual figures, as well as those whose
lifelong efforts have earned them a place in history.”
Sinkford was singled out by the editors for his work in support of
marriage equality for same-sex couples and for his prophetic leadership
in opposition to the Iraq war. Beliefnet’s page on Sinkford can be
found [here].
Upon learning of the award, Sinkford said, “It’s an honor to be
recognized within such a religiously diverse group. The richness and
variety of African American spiritual life is a joy to behold.”
Beliefnet offers resources and reflections within dozens of religious
traditions, with the aim of helping readers explore their own spiritual
paths. Beliefnet is a recipient of the Online Journalism Award for
General Excellence Online, the highest honor given by the Online News
Association.

The Death of Doris Edwards
Filed Under Obituaries, People | Leave a Comment
From Rev. Dr. Michelle Bentley, who is the Director of Professional Development at the UUA - and also the director and founder of the Sankofa Project.
Dear friends,
It is with deep sadness that we inform you of Doris Edwards’ death on Monday, February 5th. Doris was a longtime member of The Community Church of NY and a faithful GA attendee. Over the decades Doris took many, many, many pictures, especially of ministers and laity people of color and of Latin/Hispanic ancestries at GA and other important gatherings, documenting and recording major events in our history. Doris’ pictures are being donated to the Sankofa Archives for everyone’s benefit and as a tribute to her life and ministry. We will miss her. Memorial information will come later.
Peace and love,
Michelle Bentley
